Interviewers will likely raise the topic of compensation during your conversation. If you live in a state with a salary history ban, you do not have to disclose your pay from prior jobs.
Prepare for interviewers to ask about your target salary. Prompt the interviewer to share the pay range before you offer a specific number (unless the job posting already lists it). Here is a sample response to the salary question:
I expect my compensation to align with my skill set, experience, and job responsibilities. What is the salary range for this position?
This question prompts the interviewer to reveal the salary range, establishing a strong baseline for your negotiations.
